Sandford Mill

Published: 26/8/2015

The building we explored is the chemical filter building, it was used to filter the water and clean it for the Chelmsford waterworks site. Inside it housed the tanks and equipment to do this, laboratories to check and maintain everything and also the quality inspection/testing section where they would test the water to make sure it was fit for purpose. The buildings houses a striking late art deco style, both inside and out and was built in 1956 as the site expanded and needed more room to do what it needed to do.
By 1984 Langford waterworks had been constructed and took over Chelmsford waterworks job and closed it down. The council then set up Sandford mill museum.

The Explore:

I'd been told about Sandford Mill by a fellow Urbexer, and upon arrival it was quite clear to see the way in and so of course, wasted no time getting ourselves in there. We must've spent a good hour or so wandering around this place, baring in mind its not really all that large of a site to be completely honest, but theres still plenty going on inside this old mill, plenty of photographic oppurtunities.

Some parts of the corridors were covered in some of the largest spiders I have ever seen! This place seems untouched from vandals as there is no graffiti or smashed equipment/windows/doors etc. anywhere, which makes a nice change!

We found access onto the roof after a quick little wander around of the second floor, not really a lot to see up there but hey, you might aswell see it all right?
